Your local Sandstone Fireplace Restorers and Cleaners got called out to Mr Bloor’s family home in Nuneaton.  He was having difficulties regarding his sandstone fireplace. The big issue he was finding is a common problem with Sandstone fireplaces. You see after years of coal burning the heat begins to split the sealant protecting the stone. When the sealant splits the smoke then begins to eat into the Sandstone leaving the residue trapped deep within the pores. This proves to make cleaning very challenging resulting in smudges and smears. To solve this problem the sealant needs to be stripped away. The fireplace then can be thoroughly cleaned and resealed.

The Restore and Clean.

We begin this process by pre-wetting the sandstone. This is because the solution we use reacts better when the stone is already damp. Following that we apply a high alkaline product that strips away the old sealant. After applying the solution we leave it for ten minutes undisturbed. In this time the sealant is removed and then the more stubborn stains begin to break up. Once the ten minutes is up we begin scrubbing the fireplace using hard abrasive nylon and wire brushes. When we have removed the markings left behind by the smoke we rinse the fireplace down removing any excess solution. Immediately mopping up any soiled water. The Sandstone then needs to be left to thoroughly dry out before we can reseal it.

The Sealing.

We return usually 72 hours later to reseal the fireplace. First of all we damp test the sandstone using a top of the range machine we have. This is to ensure that the fireplace has completely dried out. Any moisture will act as a barrier between the stone and sealant. When happy with the results of the damp test, we will then apply two saturations of sealant to give you a stronger, longer lasting protective layer. The sealant dries instantly however it does take 24 hours to cure. We strongly suggest not using the fireplace from the beginning of the clean to the end of the 24 hours curing time. This is because we have removed the sealant so the sandstone is not protected.
